Thomas EDISON AMBEROLA 30 PLAYER, FULLY RESTORED MECHANICALLY and only lightly cosmetically, made about 1915-1919, with over 240 Blue Amberol 4minute music cylinders in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT playing condition. Great sound from it's built-in 8 inch horn. Hand cranking charges the spring, gives it enough playtime for 2-3 cylinders. The sound is clean, beautiful, powerful.
Cylinders: many genres : orchestral, waltzes, marches, folk , fox trot, hawaiian, male and female vocalists, etc a great well chosen selection that i hand picked over the years.
Many cylinders found elsewhere are in fair to poor condition, moldy, scratched, muffled sound ...
But these here were hand picked, physically very good to superb condition, and with great sound. They can be played hundreds of times! All records recorded 1912-1920.
The Amberola 30, introduced in 1915 by Thomas Edison, is a reliable device for playing four minute Blue Amberol records. The 30 referred to its original price in dollars -- there was also a 50 and a 75 model ( they had a 10 inch horn while the 30 was 8 inch, sound difference is minimal).
This machine has been painstakingly rebuilt by experts , Victrola Repair Service in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont ,
with the goal of another hundred years of trouble free service.
Restoration included:
The experts took the motor and upperworks totally apart.
Cleaned and examined each gear. Replaced questionable gearing.
Cleaned and oiled the bushings.
Removed to clean and oil the governor shaft for smooth running. Checked the security of the governor weights so they don't fly off.
Cleaned the feed screw and half nut. Checked for wear on the half nut and adjusted half nut tension.
Reassembled, lubricated, and readjusted everything. NEW U.S. - made springs installed.
Replaced the diamond reproducer stylus with new one ( will have an over 2,000 hour life ) and rebuilt the reproducer with new gasket, membrane etc .
Fine tuned everything.
The golden oak cabinet with original, not reproduction, grill is in exceptionally nice condition.
While NOT original, the purple cloth cover on the front grille was added at my request ( can be easily removed).
The top of the black grill with the 4 oblong slots by the mechanism has a light carboard sheet under slots, i placed it to prevent dust from entering inside and bottom of motor...does not have to be there, i placed it myself only to prevent dust inside,
otherwise it's not original ( easily taken out ) .
Sure you can find on this auction site Amberola 30 machines, but they are NOT restored , and even the ones advertised as "running" will not sound right, will have weak 100 yr old springs, damaged/chipped stylus, dried membrane on reproducer, faulty gears or gunked up and more troubles.
Sure you can find Blue Amberol records too...but most you find around are in poor playing condition, scratched , out of round,
plaster inside crumbling, moldy grooves and more problems.
I am selling the whole outfit at way less than individual values.
We can meet in person in Las Vegas or southwest Utah.
Pick-up in person can be arranged in Las Vegas, NV or Utah, no charge for pick-up.
IF i ship, cost here includes Insurance, packing, shipping to lower 48s USA States.
( See card on top of black portion of player for questions to me direct and /or to hear and see machine in action.)
Size 12.5 x 12.5 x 16 inch , weight 37 pounds for the player. Cylinders come in 5 boxes.
( And advice for those of you who have 78rpm Victrolas , your needles have to be changed at every disc, those needles are steel and after 2 plays will damage the record!! Needles are not made of diamond! An Amberola plays and sounds as good or better than 78rpm discs!!! Amberols cylinders run at 120rpm!!).
THIS IS THE DEAL OF THE CENTURY for the lucky buyer. You will NOT ever find anywhere a superb player and also excellent condition , yes, all 240 records in great playing condition, all in one place !
PRICE: I invested way over $ 2,500 for all, but I priced the records at WAY BELOW fair market values, these great condition records sell around -12 on ebay, here they are only each. Amberola purchased restored was over ,100 (paperwork included) . Selling as package.
